Solomon C Barnes was the son of Tracy P Barnes 1827 and Mary Prudence Cottrell.
His parents met and married in Alden, Erie County, New York. In 1870 the family moved to Oskosh, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.
In about 1879, Solomon signed up for a homestead in the town of Milltown, Shawano County. The family, as well as his sister Adelaide's family moved there in December 1879. The town of Milltown was transferred to Langlade County and renamed Rolling about 1880.
Solomon lived there the rest of his life and stayed close to the family.

SOL C. BARNES IS DEAD AT 78
Pioneer Town of Rolling Man Dies at Home of Nephew, Perry Gillett
Sol C.Barnes, 78, was found dead in bed this morning at the home of his nephew, with whom he had been living. He was in apparently good health before retiring last evening.
Mr. Barnes was born in the town of Alden, Erie county, New York, 1858. He was the son of Tracy and Mary P. Barnes. In 1871 the Barnes family left New York and moved to Oshkosh. They lived there and in the town of Poysippi, Waushara county, until 1881 when they moved on a homestead in the town of Rolling. Mr. Barnes lived there with his parents until their death when he lived with his sister, Mrs. Addie Gillett. Since he sold the homestead he has lived at the Perry Gillett home. Mr. Barnes worked on the construction of the Milwaukee Lake Shore and Western Railroad between Eland and Antigo and was employed in some of the first sawmills in this city.
