Matilda was the 12th child of 16 born to Eleanor Tracy and David Tharp. She spent much of her childhood in Licking County, Ohio, but moved with her family to Fulton County, Illinois by the time she was 18.
In 1820 at age 20 Matilda married Silas Withrow. They farmed for 20 years in Fulton County and had three children: James, Mary, and Phillip. Then they moved to the town of Independence in Polk County, Oregon. Matilda died there at the age of 60.
