Benjamin Tharp married Nancy Emily West in 1850 in Fulton County IL, where he got a federal land grant of 40 acres. He took his family on the Oregon Trail in 1864. He took a homestead of 160 acres in what is now Chitwood in Lincoln County. In 1866 he bought a 260-acre farm near Suver in Polk County. During WWII the government took over the farm and other land, took out buildings and orchards, and made Camp Adair, a training camp for the Army. Benjamin retired to Independence in Polk County.
