David was the 13th child out of 15 of David Tharp and Eleanor Tracy. He was born in Ohio, probably on his father's farm in Licking County. David moved to Fulton County, Illinois with his parents by 1860 and lived there the rest of his life.
In 1878 he married Martha Jane McNeil, and they had at least two children--Anna and John. They must have divorced as in 1886 Mrs. Martha Tharp married Reason Harn.
In 1920 David was living in the Fulton County Poor Farm, where he died and was buried in 1922. In the 1950s a strip mining company bought the farm property, and the graves were moved to the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton, Fulton County.
