The Best clan was well represented in the ranks of the 2nd Regiment. All of them were first cousins. The first to join was George Mifflin Dallas Best. He joined Company "L" on 25 August 1862 at Cumberland Gap, Kentucky. First cousins Martin Van Buren Best and Samuel D Best joined Company "D" on 1 September 1862 at Maryville, Tennessee. Frederick D Best joined Company "F" on January 1863 probably at Maryville, Tennessee. Henry A Best joined Company "L" on 15 October 1863 at Maryville, Tennessee.

Company "L" evacuated Cumberland Gap on 16 September 186. They retreated through Kentucky to Gallipolis, Ohio.

Company "D" moved immediately to Lebanon, Kentucky in September 1862.

All companies of the 2nd Regiment assembled at Louisville, Kentucky in November 1862. The 2nd regiment was assigned to the Cavalry Division XIV Corps, Department of the Cumberland, Union Army. The Major General in command of the Army of the Army of the Cumberland was William S Rosecrans. Brigadier General James G Spears had immediate command of the 2nd Regiment which had 300 men at the time.

All of the Best cousins returned to Blount County, Tennessee except for Henry A Best, the youngest son of George Best and Jane A Roach.

George Morgan Dallas Best, passed away at his home near Chilhowee, November 22, at the age of 81 years. He married Adeline Hueling in 1871. He came to this state in the 80's in a covered wagon, with his wife and 4 children and settled near Buckner, Missouri. When the civil war broke out his father told him to go and fight for his county which he died at the age of 18 years. He had been a sufferer of stomach trouble for many years and bore his sufferings patiently but the last year he had been almost bedfast and death came to relieve his suffering. All his children expect one daughter were at his bedside when he was called away. His seven sons,

T.S., Will, Gilbert, John, Charley,Mack and Robert, all of Chilhowee and his oldest daughter Mrs. Murphy Bradley, of Oak Grove, were all at home.

Military: He enrolled in the Union Army, 8 Sept 1863, (gave his age as 18) and was mustered out 19 May 1865. He was discharge 21 May 1865.

General: Apparently names after George Miffin Dallas, Vic President under James Knox Polk. Came to Jackson County Missouri, in the fall or winter of 1879, after his son John H. Best, was born in July.
