Leona A. Engel, 85, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at the Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Fond du Lac. She was a resident of 60 N. Royal Ave. Fond du Lac. She was born June 2, 1916, in Mount Calvary, Wis., to Frank and Mary Schoenborn Schaefer. She married Lawrence Engel on Aug. 30, 1939, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Mount Calvary. He died on Sept. 14, 1991. Along with her husband, she farmed in the Mount Calvary area, moving to Fond du Lac in 1977. She was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Church Christian Mothers Society, the Abler-Engel American Legion Post 454 Auxiliary and was a past 4-H leader for Taft 23 4-H Club. She was an avid gardener. She is survived by two sons, David (Bonnie) Engel and William C. (Laura) Engel, both of Mount Calvary; one daughter, Cecilia (Norman) Ries of Neshkoro four brothers, Clarence Schaefer of St. Peter, Claude (Stella) Schaefer of Malone and Cyril (Mary) Schaefer and James (Mary) Schaefer, all of Mount Calvary; two sisters, Edna Sabel of Fond du Lac, and Virginia (Eugene) Lefeber of St. Joe; one brother-in-law, Ray Ziegelbauer of Mequon; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Allen N. Engel; one brother, Francis (Bernice) Schaefer; two sisters, Florence Ziegelbauer and Marcella Schaefer; a brother-in-law, Gilson Sabel; and one sister-in-law, Stella Schaefer. Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Mount Calvary. The Rev. Peter Kutch will officiate, with burial to be in the parish cemetery. Visitation: Will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Twohig Funeral Home, Fond du Lac, and from 10 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday at the church.
