John Butler Reed was known as "Butler". He spelled his last name as "Reed" rather than the "Read" spelling used by his parents and siblings.

He moved with his mother and siblings from Chautauqua County, New York, to La Salle County, Illinois in the early 1860s. By 1870, he moved to Pella township, Ford County, Illinois to farm. He married Sarah Patterson on April 22, 1874 in Ford County where they resided until after 1900. They next relocated to Marion, Grant county, Indiana. After 1920, they relocated to Ashtabula county in Ohio. Both John and Sarah died in Ohio; their remains were returned to Marion for burial.
