William's World War 2 draft card, as well as military enlistment records for his son, Paul Alexander Smith, state that Paul's father was named William Roy Smith.
Only one US Federal Census, the 1930, lists a middle initial for him, where he is listed as "William R. Smith."
The middle initial J does not appear on any records for him until his death certificate, and subsequently, his obituary. He did not have a headstone until 1964, when his daughter Mabel died. Her widower, Jack Danley, purchased a headstone for his departed wife's parents. He told me this himself.
