Edwin "Eddie" Hertel, 91, died Monday, March 8, 2010 at Western Plains Medical Complex at Dodge City. He was born on January 27, 1919 at Munjor, Kansas the son of Alexander and Margaret (Pfannenstiel) Hertel. He grew up on a farm Southeast of Ness City. Mr. Hertel served in the U.S. Army from 1941 thru 1945. On April 13, 1950 he married Catherine Amelia Kinkelaar at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Dodge City. She preceded him in death on April 1, 2002. Mr. Hertel started Hertel Repair in 1952. Besides working on heavy equipment, he also entered into farming. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren and walking his fence rows.
He was a member of Cathedral Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2955 both of Dodge City.
Survivors include a daughter Vickie Pegram and husband Harry of Ensign; three sons, Tom Hertel of Spearville, Marvin Hertel and wife Pamela of Ensign, and Dennis Hertel and wife Bev of Dodge City; two sisters, Agnes Beckerdite of Dodge City and Mary Dinkel of Victoria; 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers, Edmund, Wilfred, Joseph and Alfred Hertel; four sisters, Celestine and Marcella Hertel, Regina Dome and Martina Burkhart and a grandson Cade Denton Hertel.
A 7:00 P.M. Vigil service will be held Wednesday March 10, 2010 at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Funeral mass will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 903 Central, Dodge City. Burial will follow at Greencrest Memorial Gardens in Dodge City with military graveside rites by Howard Gotschall Post #1714, V.F.W.. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Memorials can be made to Sacred Heart School Endowment Fund in care of the funeral home.
