The death of JFM occurred at Pt Burwell on Thurs 21 July from drowning. While fishing on the bank of a creek he was believed to have suffered a heart attack or a faint spell, causing him to fall into the water. Mr Meharg had retired from farming and growing tobacco about 12 yrs ago and had resided at Houghton Ctr for abt 8 yrs. He had resided with his son Lloyd of Kingsmill for abt 6 wks and for the last 3 weeks had lived with his daughter (Ethel) near Pt Burwell. On March 23 1898, he was married at Mabees Crs to Miss Louis Simkins, dau of Mr & Mrs Wm Simkins, of Cass City, MI who predeceased him on 26 May 1944. He was also predeceased by a son who burned to death in a tobacco kiln fire while curing tobacco on Sept 26 1942 and a son & wife who were killed in a car accident on May 4 1949.
Surviving to mourn their loss are two sons and one daughter: Daniel of Ojibway ON, Lloyd of Kingsmill, and Ethel Meharg of Vienna; three brothers, Robert and Whitfield of Glen Meyer, and Charles of Yale MI; and one sister Mrs George Whitesell of Tillsonburg; also 15 grandchildren and one gr-grandchild.
The funeral service was conducted at the Ostrander funeral home on Sat July 23 at 2 pm by Rev Alfred Yeoman of Tillsonburg. Miss Jean Stansell sang two solos… (names pall bearers). Floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. Out of town relatives came from Yale, Hamilton & Windsor. Interment in Tillsonburg Cemetery.
