Norman Glenn Wells, 78, of Laurel, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, with his family at his side.
Funeral services will held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with interment in Lake Park Hills Cemetery.
He was a Christian husband, dad, friend, coach and golfer. He was credited with having a significant impact on everyone he came in contact with and his love for working with young people led him to become one of the most successful coaches in Mississippi.
Coach Wells was head football coach at Heidelberg High School (1950-63), LaSalle High School in Olla, La. (1964), Northeast Jones High School (1965-1976) with his black/gold van with the Tiger mascot painted on it becoming his trademark. He compiled a 156-101-7 record.
He was selected to coach the Mississippi All-Star Football Game, voted Rebel Conference Coach of the Year, 1960, 61, 62, and DeSoto Conference Coach of the Year in 1970. His teams won Rebel Conference and DeSoto Conference championships.
He also coached baseball and basketball just as successfully, winning four Rebel Conference baseball championships and compiled a 446-276 overall record with his basketball teams.
He is credited with being instrumental in organizing the Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC) and served as president of this organization. He was inducted into the Mississippi Coaches Hall of Fame in 1980.
He finished out his years in education by serving as supervising principal of South Jones High School.
He was a member, deacon and Sunday School teacher of Highland Baptist Church. He was also former minister of music of Sandersville Baptist Church and a member of the Gideons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Addie Wells; in-laws, Clyde and Myrtis Ward; brothers, Onus Wells, U.C. Wells, Vardaman Wells, Otho Wells, Lewis Wells and Zeno Wells; sisters, Cleota Albritton, Roma Ree Pope and Mildred Weatherford.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Betty Ward Wells of Laurel; five children and their spouses, Donna Nettlestad of Tampa, Fla., Charlotte Smith of Lafayette, La., Rick and Sandra (Glyn) Sumrall of Ellisville, Greg and Brenda Thomas of Shubuta, and Sherman and Holly Wells of Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren, Ryan Nowlin and Jarod Brewer of Tampa, Brittany Johnson of Oak Grove, La., Chelsey Sumrall of Ellisville, Berry and his fiancee Mary-Ryan, Christie and Courtney Thomas of Shubuta, Jamie and Patrick Howard of Lafayette, La., and Lauren Manning of Tampa; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Doug Wells of Florida and a sister, Vera Gatewood of Texas; and a host of special cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Buddy Sauls, Mike McClelland, Curtis Allen, Billy Mac Belding, Sherman Livingston and George Myrick.
Visitation is today from 5-8 p.m. at Memory Chapel Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
