Frederick Wilhelm Schaffner was the youngest child. When he was growing up, his mother ran a boarding house in Quincy, Illinois. He was known familiarly as Fred. He married Anastacia Wurtz and he worked as a machinist.
Before he married, Fred Schaffner toured with a two-person vaudevillian comedic act. He had what they called a "trick house" which had springs inside, and he or his fellow performer would (for instance) jump into a window, and sail out of the chimney.
He also toured with a small circus as part of a high wire act. He retired when a fellow performer fell and sustained a head injury. Some felt dissatisfied at the circus owner's reaction and handling of the incident.
Fred Schaffner had a quiet demeanor, but a quick, razor sharp wit when he did speak. He had a twinkle in his eye, and a keen, but compassionate, sense of humor. He remained agile even into old age, with a family member remarking "he could pick up a matchbook in his teeth, leaning forward on his hands." In his elder years he walked with a cane. However, his posture remained straight. He always was nicely dressed, even to sit at home.
He was a top level Mason. With his wife, he had one child: a son, Quentin Fred Schaffner.
Fred Schaffner passed away in a Quincy hospital. He rests beside his wife Anastacia, who had died aged 43.
