Maiden Name Spellings: In their marriage certificate it is written (Jacob & Mary) and in a school record at the Missouri School For The Deaf (student card for their son, Louis) it is typed, that her name is "Leher".
It should be noted that on various family member documents the last name is spelled Ealer, Ayler, Ehler, Oehler, Aler and Ailer.
An example on their son Frank's death certificate where his mother's maiden name is given as Mary Aler. On daughter, Treasa's death certificate it is transcribed "Eihler".
Her first marriage was to Jacob Schaffner, 09 Oct 1869 in Adams County, Illinois. In the 1870 Census she is living with the widower, Jacob and 3 of his children from his previous marriage. Her age is listed as "17".
Mary had 9 known children by Jacob.
Information from World Tree Project is also that in the 1880 U S Census Mary is listed as being "36 years of age" and born in 1844.
This leaves a lot of room for speculation as to what is the correct information regarding Mary's age. This continues with the following information...
She then remarried "at 52 years of age" (this from the Quincy Daily Journal) to John Kammerer (aka Kemmerer) in Quincy, Adams, Illinois in 1900. The papers stated that, "Mr. and Mrs. Kammerer will soon remove to Warsaw, Illinois were the goom has provided a nice home". The 1900 U S Census lists John Kammerer b. Jul 1830 in Germany as the head of household of a residence in Warsaw, Hancock, Illinois and his wife Mary (whose date of birth is listed as May,1849 and 52y of age) who he has married in 1900 are living there with his stepsons, Frank and Frederick (their dates of birth are not an exact match to the known info). The date of this census, is June 13th which fits with the marriage info). Mary is listed as having been born in Germany, however her parents are listed as being born in Illinois and the other in Germany. I believe that this may be our Mary. Information is also listed that Mary is the mother of 8 living children. That marriage ended in dissolution in 1901.
Also on 9 Feb 1901 her daughter, Mathilda Schaffner-Weimann, died in child birth in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 20y and 24 days (alternative age is given as 26y in the Quincy Daily Journal). The Quincy obituary states "died in childbirth...her mother was with her when she died". A second obituary (copy obtained in 2012) is from the St. Louis Dispatch dated 10 Feb 1901. In this they state that the funeral was held in Pinckneyville, Illinois. No burial location listed.
Mary remarried one last time to Casper Wurtz on 13 July 1904 in Quincy, Adams, Illinois "at the residence of the bride" This marriage continued until his passing in 1915.
