Stephen Schaffner was born about 1860 in (probably Quincy) Illinois. The family members seemed to go back and forth between Quincy IL and St Louis, MO.
Stephen was raised by his father and his stepmother Mary (Ehler) Schaffner. He had two siblings: Jacob and Elizabeth, and several half siblings.
Stephen married Mary Gruell, 18 June 1884 in Adams county, Illinois. She died 6 May 1886, aged 19.
Stephen then married Anna Phermann, 24 May 1887, in Adams county, Illinois. She would become his widow.
An obituary in the Quincy Daily Journal mentions that Stephen Schaffner left a widow and four young children. According to this article, he died from consumption.
This death notice also mentions that Stephen Schaffner had been employed for the prior 15 years as a foreman at Smith-Hill. (Contemporary city directory listings describe his job as "time keeper.")
The widow Anna Schaffner seems to have stayed on in Quincy. She is found in the city directories there, for (at least) 1898, 1903, 1906, and 1908. She is listed as the widow of Stephen Schaffner each time.
A second article mentions the interment of Stephen Schaffner on Sunday, 16 August 1896 in Woodland cemetery in Quincy, Illinois. His funeral was held at his residence, 837 South Fifth Street in Quincy, just prior.
