WALLA WALLA - Arthur "Art" Sailer, 81, of Milton-Freewater died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10 at the Christ The King Lutheran Church, 325 S.W. 6th St., in Milton-Freewater.

Mr. Sailer was born May 21, 1928, in Krem, N.D., to Adam and Paulina Sailer, one of 13 children. He attended school in Hazen, N.D., and later began working on farms and in construction on the Garrison Dam on the Missouri River in North Dakota. In 1950 he joined the Army and served during the Korean Conflict; he received the Purple Heart while in Korea. He was discharged in 1957.

He married Delores E. Berg in Riverdale, N.D., in 1958. They moved their family to Milton-Freewater in 1967. While in Oregon he worked on the Little Goose Dam and Green Peter Dam and also worked for Ben Hunt Manufacturing in Walla Walla for 15 years. He later opened his own welding shop, which he operated for 11 years.

Mr. Sailer is survived by his wife Delores at the home; daughters Carmen Bales of Missouri, Carlotta Richardson of Milton-Freewater, Juanita Lint of Forest Grove and Karen Binder of Walla Walla; brother Benny Sailer of Pick City, N.D.; sister Helen Ziemann of Cheyenne, Wyo.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.
