DEATHS
COREY. --In Sheffield, PA., December 18, 1875, Rufus Corey, aged 98 years.
Mr. Corey when quite young moved into Allegany Co., N.Y. with his father's family. At that time Western New York was a wilderness, and young Corey soon developed into a mighty hunter. A great many anecdotes are still told by the old residents of Allegany and Steuben counties of " Cuff Corey," as he was familiarly called.
On one occasion he got on the track of a large buck, which he soon overtook and shot. The deer fell, and Corey dropping his rifle jumped on the deer's back, catching hold of the buck's horns with one hand, and drawing his knife, he attempted to cut his throat; when the deer jumping to his feet, started at a lively pace through the woods with Corey still on his back. After running about half a mile, the deer gave up, and he dispatched him with his knife.
We speak within bounds when we say that thousands of deer, bear, and other wild animals, have bitten the dust at the crack of his rifle. He killed over 2,000 deer in his lifetime. He has lived with his son, M.V. Corey, Esq., who, together with his family, have done all in their power to make his last days pleasant and happy.
Mr. Corey was a kind hearted man, a good neighbor, and was respected by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
In researching Rufus I feel a very special closeness to him, yes I realize he has been gone from the face of the earth for over 130 years, but I also believe our ancestors still live within each of us today.
