OBIT:MORRIS TRIBUNE, FEB 26 1926:
"JOHN ROWLES: Another of Stevens County's pioneers passed away Sunday, February 21, when John Rowles, one of the early settlers of Horton township, died at the age of 72 years. Death was caused by a cerebral hemorrhage. Mr. Rowles had been in failing health for more than two years.
"Mr. Rowles was born at Schuylerville, New York, where he spent his early life. He came to Minnesota 47 years ago and came directly to Stevens county [not correct: was with family in Goodhue Co. at least as late as 1870 and possibly 1875] and located on a farm in Horton township where he lived until six years ago when he retired and came to Morris to make his home. He was married to Miss Mary McHugh in 1880 and to this union were born nine children. Mrs Rowles and two of the children William and James preceded Mr Rowles in death. Mr. Rowles was a member of the Assumption church, the Knights of Columbus and Workman Lodge.
"Although Mr. Rowles was confined to his home since suffering a stroke of paralysis two years ago, he seldom complained and had a cheerful word for all whom he met, He kept himself informed in regard to people and happenings through conversation and through the newspapers and did not permit himself to be discouraged.
"Mr. Rowles is survived by two daughters, Mary of Morris and Alice of Green Bay, Wisconsin and five sons, Vincent, Bernard and George of this city, Clarence of Milwaukee and Luke of Hancock. He is also survived by brother, Patrick Rowles, of Goodhue and seven grandchildren.
"Funeral services with Requiem high mass were held from Assumption church Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock. Rev. Father Rauch. Interment was in Calvary cemetery.
