Mary Susan Shorb was born in May , 1866, in Keysville, Carroll County, Maryland, the daughter of Edward and Ellen Martin Shorb. On May 6, 1891, in Keysville, she married Calvin Horkey Valentine, son of James Edward and Ella Josephine Rodeniser Valentine. They were the parents of two children: Lenny Ray and Ellen Josephine Valentine. Mary passed away on October 2, 1954, in Keysville, and was buried the 5th in Keysville Union Cemetery there.

"Calvin H. Valentine, 22, of Rocky Ridge, bachelor, to Mary S. Shorb, 24, of Keysville, Carroll County, maid. Married May 6, 1891, at the bride's home, by Rev. J. U. Asper."

"Mrs. Mary S. Valentine, 88, widow of Calvin H. Valentine, died at 10 o'clock Friday morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. E. Gregg Kiser, near Keysville, where she had been residing for years. She had been ill several days. She was a daughter of Edward and Ellen Martin Shorb and was a member of the Keysville Lutheran Church and active in the Sunday School, Missionary Society and Christian Endeavor. Her husband died 19 years ago. Surviving are a son, Lenny R. Valentine, Wrightsville, Pennsylvania; a daughter, Mrs. Kiser; two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter, and a brother, Wilbur L. Shorb, Taneytown. Friends may call at the late residence after 1 p.m. on Sunday. Her remains will lie in state in Keysville Church from1 to 2 p.m. on Monday, with services at 2 o'clock, Rev. Dixon A. Yaste will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery. C. O. Fuss and Son, funeral directors."
