A SUDDEN CALL
Valentine Thresh, a well known and highly respected farmer of Monroe Township was found dead in bed last Friday forenoon. He had attended the Coshocton Fair on Thursday, returning home about 7 o'clock in the evening. At this time he showed no signs of illness, as he ate a hearty supper and then went to the barn and turned the horse he had driven into a pasture field. He then told his son Jacob and wife, who live in the same house with him some things he had observed at the fair and at his usual time retired to his room. In the night he was heard either raising or lowering the window and soon afterward his son opened the door of his fathers room and asked him if he wanted anything. Receiving no answer, he supposed his father had gone to sleep and he concluded not to disturb him. Sometime afterward he heard his father coughing, but gave it little thought. This was probably about 3 o'clock in the morning. When breakfast had been prepared in the morning and Mr Thresh did not get up, it created no alarm as he frequently arose late in the morning. After breakfast Charles and Jacob Thresh the two sons of the deceased got ready to start with a load of apples which they had previously prepared to the mill for the purpose of making cider. Just before starting Jacob Thresh asked his wife if his father had got up and received a negative reply, told her to let him rest as he was at the fair the day before and was probably very tired. About 9 o'clock, when he had still not arose his daughter-in-law became uneasy and going to his room called him. Not receiving any answer, she became alarmed and dreading to make an investigation alone notified Mrs William Thresh who is a near neighbor and the two entered the room to find Mr Thresh cold in death. Valentine Thresh was born in Germany in February 1827 and was in the 74th year of his age when called so suddenly from this world. When a boy his parents brought him to this country and settled in Adams Township. Upon reaching manhood he was married to Salome Roahrig and seven children were born to them, four boys and three girls. Mrs Thresh died about 23 years ago and since that time four of the children have followed her to the grave. The deceased bore these bereavements in Manly spirit trusting in his Heavenly Father for help and guidance in all his afflictions of sorrow and trouble. For many years the deceased has been troubled with polypuses of the nose which at times made it difficult to understand him when talking. About three years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and since that time he has been in rather delicate health. Squire G T Riney of Otsego, held an inquest over the remains and pronounced death due to heart disease. The surviving children are Charles and Jacob Thresh of Monroe Township and Mrs Mary Brannon of near Birds Run. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at the Zion Lutheran Church, at which place the deceased had been a faithful and influential member for many years. The services were conducted by Rev H H Bachman and the remains were buried in the cemetery at that place.
