John was the son of Valentine Nestor Thresh and Salome “Sarah” Roahrig, who married on 12 Apr 1854 in Muskingum Co., Indiana. According to Valentine’s obituary, the couple had seven children together, four sons and three daughters—Elizabeth “Lizzie” (6 Feb 1855 – 19 Mar 1883), George (23 May 1859 – 29 Jun 1896), Charles (11 Mar 1860 – 5 Sep 1930), Mary E. (12 Mar 1862 – 15 Nov 1930), Jacob (2 Dec 1865 – 16 Jul 1950), John V. (11 May 1867 – 27 Aug 1898), and Katherine (8 Aug 1869 – 28 Jan 1889).

John’s family appeared on the 1860 Census, living in Adams, Muskingum Co., Ohio. Head of household was noted as “Felty” Thrash, whom I assume was Valentine Thresh, aged 30 and farming for a living. Sarah (aka Salome), aged 26, was home with their three children—Elizabeth, aged 6, George, aged 4, and 2-month-old Charles.

John first appeared with his family on the 1870 Census, living in Monroe Township in Muskingum Co., Ohio. Valentine Thresh, aged 43, was busy farming. Sarah, aged 39, had her hands full at home caring for their seven children—Elizabeth, aged 15, George, aged 13, Charles, aged 10, Mary, aged 8, Jacob, aged 6, John, aged 3, and Kate, aged 1.

Sadly, two years after that census, the family lost wife and mother Sarah on 2 Jul 1872 at age 41.

The family was still in the same place when the 1880 Census was taken. Valentine Thresh, widowed, aged 53, was still farming. Still at home with their father were Charles, aged 20, Jacob, aged 15, John, aged 13, and Catherine, aged 12.

Having the 1890 Census back would be lovely.

On Christmas Eve, 24 Dec 1895, John married Lizzie E. Gerard, the daughter of George W. Gerard and Margaret Ann Burden. They did not have any children together. Sadly, John and Lizzie’s happiness was short-lived. Three years after they married, John died on 27 Aug 1898 at age 31.
