Fred Randolph Berry, 84, widower of Hilda Mae (Pittsley) Berry, of 319 Rainbow Drive, Staunton died at 10:26 p.m. Sunday (June 27, 2004) at King's Daughters' Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born May 1, 1920 in Augusta County, a son of the late Arch Monroe and Lee Vata (Root) Berry.

Mr. Berry was a veteran of World War II having served in Europe with Field Artillery. He was awarded three battle stars for participating in three major battles. Also awarded to him was the ETO Ribbon, Good Conduct, Army of Occupation, American Theatre, Victory Ribbon, and others, including a Certificate of Appreciation from the French Government.

He was a member of the V. F. W., T. P. A., a charter and life member of Staunton B. P. O. Elks Lodge No. 351, AARP, and Retired Army Reserve with the rank of 1st Sgt.

Prior to retirement, Mr. Berry had been employed at DuPont, sold real estate, and retired as Sales Manager from World Book Encyclopedia with 25 years service.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Family members include two daughters, Nancy Lee Berry of Fork Union and Roberta Berry Schrott of San Diego, CA; two step-daughters, Marjorie Abell and her husband Creed III of Austin, TX and Diane McKibben of New Bedford, MA; four grandchildren, Andrea Hull, Michael Sellers, Creed Abell IV, and Janice Kinnear; three great grandchildren; three nieces; two special nephews, Jim and John Berry; and his good friend and companion, Bobbye D'Orsi.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday (July 1, 2004) in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Joseph C. Brandon.

Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery with Military Rites by Staunton V. E W. Post No. 2216.

Active pallbearers will be James Houff, Charles Neer, James E. Berry, John R. Berry, Michael Sellers, Christopher Hull, Michael Tucker, and Boyd Thompson.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Staunton Elks Lodge No. 351.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. today (June 30, 2004) at the funeral home and other times, at his residence.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Staunton-West Augusta County Unit, c/o Mrs. John O. Arey, 325 Driscoll Street, Staunton, VA 24401 or to a charity of one's choice.
