She was born in Greene County Nov. 10, 1886, a daughter of the late John C. and Mary Dickinson Root. Mrs. Berry was educated in public and private schools in Augusta County, attended Bridgewater College, and received her degree from Rawlings Institute, Charlottesville, in 1906.
As a child she joined the Spring Hill, Baptist Church in Albemarle County, later moving her membership to the Bridgewater Baptist Church. She taught in various schools, both public and private, in Augusta County.
Mrs. Berry was always interested in the betterment of the community and was instrumental in organizing the first home demonstration club in Augusta County, the Spring Hill Home Demonstration Club, organized in 1917.
On Jan. 30, 1909, she was united in marriage with Arch Monroe Berry, who died July 23, 1956. To this union were born six children. Three sons predeceased her. Vernon Franklin Berry died in infancy, John Myron Berry died at 37 and Arch Monroe Berry Jr. died at 21.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Lee Hiner and two sons, James Edwin Derry and Fred Randolph Berry, all of Staunton; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Pansy Harrison of Harrisonburg and a brother, John Root of Lexington, Ky.
Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Monday afternoon at Pleasant View Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Paul Shiflet and the Rev. J. T. Hayter. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: J. Carl Berry, R. Harold Berry, Russell J. Berry, Jack Sillings, William E. Homes and Alfred Ryder.
Honorary: Darwin Arey, O. B. Knott, Lacy Cupp, Raymond Crosby, Edwin McCray, E. M. Hewitt, J. W. Jones, Harry DeVore, Robert H. Lockridge, Scott Hamrick, Fred Harmon, Carl Craun, Robert Sterrett, Billy Cook, Guy Van Lear, Raymond Crosby Jr., V. P. Leavel, L, S. Saufley, and Stanley G. Cline.
The family will receive friends at the Hamrick Funeral Home from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.
The body will be placed in the church an hour prior to service time.
