Elijah (who is sometimes found in records as "Elihu")was the son of Zachariah and Elizabeth (Skinner) Sproles and the husband of Narcissa Simmons. Although born in N.C. (probably Richmond County), he grew up near Durant in Holmes Co., Mississippi. Elijah was listed as a member in the second "minutes book" of the congregation of Saron Baptist Church of Durant, Mississippi. Elijah married Narcissa Simmons, probably about 1855. He is listed with Narcissa and their children in the 1860 Holmes Co., Mississippi census. Swept up in the War Between the States, Elijah served in the CSA Army as did his brother James. Elijah died during the War, reportedly a few days before the surrender of Vicksburg which his unit was defending. There is a gravestone in Saron Cemetery inscribed "Elijah B. Sproles, Co.K 29 Mississippi Inf CSA". No dates of blrth/death appear on the stone. This is possibly a memorial stone as it is uncertain if his remains are interred here or in a common grave with the other Confederate dead at Vicksburg. Elijah and Narcissa's children were Addison, Theodosia and James Wilson. Following Elijah's death, his widow, Narcissa, kept house for another elderly widower, Wm Elmore, and his children. Narcissa died sometime after 1870 and before 1880. Narcissa and Elijah's three young children, Addison, Theodosia and James went to South Carolina to live with Narcissa's relatives.
