James R. Sproles was born 1839 in Holmes County Mississippi, the son of Zachariah and Elizabeth (Skinner) Sproles. In 1861 James joined the CSA, 1st Mississippi Infantry Battalion Sharpshooters, Co.B, with his friends and family members in the defense of his homeland. His brother, Eljah B. Sproles, served in the CSA, Co.D, 1st Mississippi Lt Artillery and lost his life in the defense of Vicksburg. His remaining brother, John Wilson Sproles, served in the CSA, Co.K, 29th Mississippi Infantry Regiment and survived the War.
James never returned home from the War and died in the hospital at Augusta, Georgia.
