Irene was born on August 21, 1909 in Red River County, Texas to Richard Emmitt Batchelor and Rosie Viola Bishop.

Irene had many brothers and sisters; Everett Leon, Emmitt Lee, Maggie Arizona, Dessie Lorene, Lottie Cleo, R.V., Robert Daniel "Mutt", Ray, Della Fay and Delbert Savoyee (who died when he was 7 months old).

Irene married James Shipman on August 29, 1925 and to that union was born Leroy, James, Melba, Mary, Betty, Billy, Donald, Howard and Darrell.

Irene passed away on October 24, 1997.
