Philomene Berens, 91, Hays, died Saturday, April 21, 2007, at Hays Medical Center. She was born Dec. 5, 1915, in Antonino to John M. and Mary Theresa (Herl) Pfannenstiel.

She married Otto Berens on Oct. 18, 1937. He preceded her in death Jan. 2, 1975.

She was a farmwife and a housekeeper at Fort Hays State University. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Arlene M. Erbert and Marian Ptaschek, both of Ellis, and Catherine Kutina, McPherson; two brothers, Henry Pfannenstiel, Hays, and DJ Pfannenstiel, Munjor; two sisters, Rosie Dome, Kansas City, and Theresa Schippers, Victoria; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers Ted, Bob, Jake and Eddie Pfannenstiel, and sisters; Lucy Schmidtberger, Ida Dinkel, Armella Ross, Louise Steckline, Virginia Dreiling and infant sister Theresa Pfannenstiel.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at Hays Memorial Chapel, 20th and Pine. A Parish vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Masses or church in care of the funeral home.
