FUNERAL HOME CARD
---Robert Earl Shumaker was born December 24, 1911 at Gifford in Macon County, Missouri to Charles and Lillie (Roberts) Shumaker.
---At the age of 21, he left Missouri and came to Kansas to work. That is when he met his wife to be, Ruby Baker of Hazelton, Kansas. They were married at Medicine Lodge, Kansas on September 21, 1935. After their marriage they moved to Missouri where their oldest daughter, Loretta, was born.
---They later moved back to Kansas where three of their children, Lillian, Larry and Linda were born. They resided in Hazelton until moving to Attica. Robert helped dig the holes for the water tower in Hazelton with pick and shovel. He has been a sow hand, farmer, and worked for WPA to plant tree tows around Sharon and Medicine Lodge. Robert worked for the railroad for 34 years, retiring at the age of 65 in 1975. He could shock feed quicker then some, leaving beautiful shocks. He always left a job well done.
---After retirement, he never quit working. He always planted a huge garden which he took pride in. He always told about the garter snake that would follow him down the rows. He also had a crippled robin which went with him as well. He delighted in telling about his 3 legged turtle that would come up to the back door of the house and wait for him to feed it bites of hotdogs. He fed the squirrels and birds. He would always have water for the neighbors' dogs and whatever other animal needed a drink. He also told about the snake that he let live in the cellar for years. He loved all kinds of animals and hated to see any of them hurt or mistreated. He always had a dog and a special burial place for them in the back yard when their time ended.
---Robert mowed yards and trimmed trees and bushes for other people, as well as the hospital grounds in Attica. He always used a push mower and trimmed by hand. He also painted a house and garage when he was 85 years old. He helped at auctions, which he really enjoyed, until he was in a very bad car wreck and wasn't able to anymore. He loved raising beautiful flowers, which he would share with people at the bank and care home.
---Robert became Ruby's Avon delivery person, which he enjoyed, as he loved visiting with people. They had this hobby for 26 years. He also collected railroad date nails and insulators down through the years.
---Robert attended the Faith Baptist Church in Attica as long as his health allowed. Robert and Ruby helped start the Faith Baptist Church in Attica. There was a revival and the evangelist went to Robert and Ruby and said they needed to get a church started. So they got some people together and held prayer meetings in their homes. Prayer meetings were later held in the Brant funeral home until they were able to have a building moved into Attica to become the Faith Baptist Church. Years later, the Faith Baptist Church purchased the United Bretheren Church on Highway 160.
---Due to failing health, Robert and Ruby went to reside at the Attica Long Term Care on July 17, 2006. Here he enjoyed watching the birds at his bird feeder by his window, reading his papers and visiting.
---Robert went to be with the Lord on February 7, 2008.
---His wife Ruby survives him. Other survivors include his two daughters, Loretta Babcock of Attica and Linda Culver and her husband, Bob of Harper; a son Larry Shumaker and wife, Alice of Rocklin, California; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; as well as several other relatives and friends.
---Preceding him in death are his parents, Charles and Lillie Shumaker; his brothers, Floyd, Virgil and Roy Shumaker; his sisters, Maurita Murphy, Evelyn Hayden, Thelma Jane Perkins and Laura Brown; a daughter, Lillian Graves; a granddaughter, Lucinda Culver; a great grandson, Shane Jordan and a great-great-grandson, Gabriel Schreiner.
