NILES - Marjorie E. "Marge" Stephens, 94, of LaSalle Avenue, Niles, MI, died at 9:48 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9th, in Hospice House, South Bend, IN, following a brief illness. She was born on May 1, 1915, in Elkhart County, IN, to John and Agnes (Christophel) Shank. She graduated from Wakarusa (Indiana) High School in 1932 and moved to Niles in 1946. She owned and operated Stephens Grocery on South Eleventh Street, Niles. She retired from the Simplicity Pattern Company, Niles, after 10 years of service. Marge attended the First Presbyterian Church, Niles. She was a volunteer at West Woods of Niles and for the Babe Ruth Baseball League at Thomas Stadium, Niles. On July 3, 1937, in Wakarusa, she married Merle George Stephens, who preceded her in death on January 9, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Marcia Diane Stephens, who died in 1941; grandson, Tracy Stephens, who died in 1981; sisters, Gladys Ganger, Florence Schwalm, Irma Mishler and Lucille Messner; and brothers, Kenneth, Alvin and Roy Shank. Mrs. Stephens is survived by her son, Terry (Kay) Stephens of Niles; daughter, Leuellyn (Harold) Myers of Granger, IN; grandsons, Thomas Stephens, Brandon and Kyle Myers; five great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; and brothers, Donald Shank of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Kermit Shank of Hamilton, IN. The funeral service for Marjorie E. Stephens will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 13th, in Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with Pastor Jason Miller of Granger Community Church officiating. Interment will be at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Niles. The family will receive relatives and friends in the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Contributions in memory of Marge may be made to the American Cancer Society for cancer research.
