Merle G. Stephens

NILES- Merle G. Stephens, 91, of LaSalle Avenue, Niles, Michigan died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at West Woods of Niles following a brief illness. Mr. Stephens was born on July 4, 1916, in Denver, Colorado to Lloyd and Agnes (Ebberts) Stephens. He moved from Kansas to South Bend and later to Niles in 1946. For 20 years, he owned and operated Stephen's Grocery on South Eleventh Street in Niles. Prior to owning the grocery store he was employed at Bendix in South Bend. After selling the store, Merle was employed and retired from Bendix in Saint Joseph, Michigan. Merle was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy. He was a life-member of VFW Post #360 in Mishawaka and was a member of American Legion Post #284 in South Bend. Merle was also on the Babe Ruth Baseball Committee and volunteered as head groundskeeper at Thomas Stadium. On July 3, 1937, in Wakarusa, Indiana he married the former Marjorie E. Shank, who survives. Mr. Stephens is also survived by their children, Terry (Kay) Stephens of Niles and Leuellyn (Harold) Myers of Granger; three grandchildren, Thomas Stephens and Brandon and Kyle Myers; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elva Kellogg of Bradenton, Florida. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcia Diane Stephens who died in 1941; a grandson, Tracy Stephens, who died in 1981; and a brother, Cloyd Stephens. Funeral services for Merle G. Stephens will be at 11 a.m. Monday, January 14, 2008, in Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with Pastor Jeffrey L. Whittaker of Michiana Christian Embassy in Niles, officiating. Interment will be at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens in Niles, where Full Military Honors will be presented by The American Legion Post # 284 of South Bend. Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
