The youngest child of Morris Hoelzel and Selma Friedmann, Herman married Ruby "Lucille" Presson on 26 Jan 1946. The marriage was performed by a justice of the peace in St. Charles County, Missouri.

Lucille was the daughter of Albert "Abb" Presson and Ollie "Jane" Willis.

Herman and Lucille were the parents of 2 children, but divorced when the boys were young. Herman raised both of them after his first marriage ended.

Herman was an employee of the United States Post Office for many years.

He married Mrs. Agnes "Dorrine" (nee Douez) Hardin in early May of 1954. She was a native of Illinois, and was the mother of a boy and a girl from a former marriage.

Herman and his boys lived with Dorrine and her children in St. Louis County.

They divorced around 1958.

Children from second marriage: 1 step-son, 1 step-daughter.

Herman married Mary Sikes on 04 Mar 1961. She had been married twice before, but did not have any children from either marriage.

Herman's older son, Bobby, became a police officer. He was married and the father of 2 young children when he was killed in the line of duty during a jewelry store robbery in Normandy, St. Louis County, Missouri on 06 Jan 1977. He was 29-years-old at the time of his death.

Herman was a member of the First Baptist Church in St. John, St. Louis County, Missouri. He also belonged to the Algabil Masonic Lodge #544.

He was known for the many stories he loved to tell, and always seemed to have one ready for any situation. He approached life with an easy-going style and had a sense of humor to match.

At the time of his death due to cancer, Herman was 89 years, 4 months and 5 days old. He was survived by 1 son, Ronnie Hoelzel of Virginia; 5 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his son, Bobby, Herman was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his mother and father; 5 brothers, Conrad Hoelzel, who died in infancy, George Hoelzel, Elmer Hoelzel, Carl Hoelzel and Frank Hoelzel; and 3 sisters, Rose Eads, Minnie Vint and Katheryn Killebrew.

Visitation was held on 21 Nov 1999 at Sparks Funeral Home in Bonne Terre, Missouri. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. the following morning at the Sparks Chapel. Herman was buried next to his wife, Mary, who passed away in 1984.
