"Elmer" was the son of Moritz Bernhardt "Morris" Hoelzel and Selma Maria Friedmann. Elmer's parents and older brother, George, arrived at Ellis Island in New York on 25 Apr 1893 after coming to America from Bremen, Germany on board The Dresden.

Elmer was born less than 2 months later after the family made their way to Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. He was baptized "Helmuth Emil Hoelzel" at a Lutheran church there soon after his birth.

The Hoelzels lived in Kansas City for 6 years before moving to Melzo, Jefferson County, Missouri where they established a farm in 1899.

Elmer was a life-long farmer and took over the Hoelzel family farm after his father's death in 1912.

Elmer married Maude Holdman on 20 Apr 1927 in De Soto, Jefferson County, Missouri. They were the parents of 3 children.

At the time of his death, Elmer was 88 years, 7 months and 13 days old.

He was survived by his wife, Maude; 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law; 5 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Rose Eads, Minnie Vint and Katheryn Killebrew; and 2 brothers, Carl Hoelzel and Herman Hoelzel.

In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Conrad Hoelzel, who died in infancy, George Hoelzel and Frank Hoelzel.

Elmer was buried on 04 Feb 1982 at Moontown Baptist Church Cemetery in Jefferson County, Missouri. His body was later reinterred at Woodlawn Cemetery in De Soto, Missouri.
