Charlie served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He entered the service in October of 1951 and received his discharge in October of 1953.
While he was in the army, Charlie married Norma June Viehman on 22 Dec 1951 at St. Andrew's Methodist Church. She was the daughter of Arnold Michael Viehman and Edna Lurene Chamberlain.
Charlie and Norma were the parents of 4 children. He worked as a farmer and was employed as a construction worker. He was a member of Carpenter's Local #2214 and built the family home on their farm in Jefferson County. His wife was an elementary school teacher.
They were members of St. Andrew's Methodist Church.
Norma passed away in 2016 after a battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease.
A few years after her death, Charlie suffered a stroke. He was able to remain in his home, with help from his family, and was eventually put under hospice care as his health deteriorated near the end of his life. He died at his home at the age of 93 years and 16 days.
He was survived by 4 daughters and 4 sons-in-law; 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 brother and 1 sister-in-law; and 1 nephew.
In addition to his wife, Charlie was preceded in death by his mother and father; and 1 brother, Benno Hoelzel.
Visitation was held from 11 a.m. until the beginning of funeral services at 1 p.m. on the afternoon of 06 May 2023 at St. Andrew's Methodist Church in DeSoto.
The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the church.
