Son of Dr. Harney Dixon Upshaw, Sr. (1846-1915) and Elizabeth (Lizzie) D. Hunt (1851-1937). Samuel Reese (Up) Upshaw, Sr. was often referred to by his initials "SR" or his nickname "Up". S.R. spent his youth in the little Texas town of Gay Hill near Somerville in Burleson Co, Texas. He married Ethel Lillie Lauderdale in Somerville 17 Dec 1908 and to that union was born 4 children: Myrtle Maurine, Samuel Reese, Jr., Francis Juanita, and Lois Ruth. Ethel passed away at the young age of 30 years leaving SR with 4 children ranging in age from 3-9. In 1921 he married a second time to Roxie Anna Locke of De Leon, Texas and in 1926 and 1930 two more children were added to the family. SR was a ticket agent for the MK&T Railroad which ran through De Leon. SR was bumped from his job several times by employees with more seniority with the company. Twice he moved his family from De Leon to save his job but finally gave up and was employed as a bookkeeper by an automobile dealership in De Leon until his death in 1940.
