Francis Juanita Upshaw was born April 3, 1915 in Granbury, Texas to Samuel Reese Upshaw (1882-1940) and Ethel Lillie Lauderdale (1889-1919). She had two brothers and four sisters; Myrtle Maurine, Samuel Reese (Jr), Lois Ruth, Gloria Jean and James Everett. Juanita grew up in De Leon, Texas where she graduated from high school. She was married to Van W. Hyde on June 18, 1943 in De Leon. No children were born to that marriage. Juanita and Van made their home in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1949, Juanita was diagnosed with breast cancer. That was in the very early days of treatment for the disease and the only tools the doctors had available to them were surgery and radiation. Both treatments were used by doctors during the following four years without the hoped for success. Juanita died in a Fort Worth hospital January 27, 1954 at the age of just 38 and was buried with her family in De Leon. (DWS 48160536)
