Lois Ruth Upshaw was born April 18, 1917 in Granbury, Texas to Samuel Reese Upshaw (1882-1940) and Ethel Lillie Lauderdale (1889-1919). She had 3 older siblings: Myrtle; Samuel Reese, Jr; and Juanita. After her mother passed away her father married Roxie Anna Locke (37829620) and to that union two children were born: Gloria and James. Lois grew up in De Leon, Texas where she graduated from high school in 1935. In 1938 she married Donald Wayne Stephens, Sr and to that union four children were born: D. W. Jr; Carolyn; Nancy Jo; and Kenneth. During the first years of marriage the couple moved several times to find employment finally settling in De Leon until their final move in 1954 to Abilene, Texas. After her husband died in 1978, Lois lived as a widow in Abilene for 50 years until age forced her to move closer to family. A broken bone in her leg rendered bedridden for the last few days of her life which ended on her 100th birthday.
