Daughter of Samuel Reese Upshaw & Ethel Lillie Lauderdale

Wife of Emmett Lawson Locke m. 1930

Myrtle Maurine Upshaw was born May 30, 1910 in Dublin, Texas to Samuel Reese Upshaw (1882-1940) and Ethel Lillie Lauderdale (1889-1919). Myrtle was only about 9 years old when her mother died and she and her 3 siblings (Reese, Jr.; Juanita; and Lois) went to live with their grand mother. Myrtle developed an older sister demeanor of caring for her brother and sisters which was apparent through the remainder of her life. Her father was a ticket agent with a railroad and his job forced the family to move several times during her childhood. In 1921, following the death of her mother and the remarriage of her father to Roxie Anna Locke, the family moved to De Leon, Texas where Myrtle lived for the rest of her life. She graduated from high school in 1928 and was married 2 years later to Emmett Lawson Locke (1903-1990). Three daughters were born to that marriage; Betty Sue, Nina Lou, and Patricia Ann. Myrtle was raised in the Baptist Church until age 18 when she decided to make the First Christian Church in De Leon her church home and to which she faithfully served for the remainder of her 90 years. Her life accomplishments included teaching Sunday School, member of Christian Women's Fellowship and was a charter member and driving force in the De Leon Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed card games and for many years was a member of Bridge club. She actually died in a Fort Worth hospital on June 24, 2000 but her heart remained in her beloved hometown, De Leon, Texas.
