Mahaley was the oldest child of William and Mary (Lawless) Nesbit's family. Around 1828, she married John Burns "of Norcross," and the couple had four children. They were William Burns (married Parthenia E. Mason), James E. Burns (married Caroline Roberts and moved to Chattooga County), Louisiana (Luzany) Burns (married George W. Matthews), and Jane Elizabeth Burns (married Ebenezer P. Ellis).

Husband John Burns died in the period 1838-1840, and Mahaley was also dead by 1850. They are presumably buried in the Nesbit Family Cemetery, but no stones now exist for either of them.
