Alvin Crawford Nesbit was the eighth child of William and Mary (Lawless) Nesbit. On 26 Oct 1848, in Gwinnett County, he married Rebecca J. Craig, daughter of Robert and Nancy (Adair) Craig. The couple had five sons Alvin Claud, Walter J., Robert P., and Earnest A., and Craig. Alvin and Rebecca's family lived in Berkshire District of Gwinnett County, where he was a farmer. After Alvin died, Rebecca lived with her son Earnest's family in DeKalb County, Georgia.

During the Civil War, Alvin served as a Private in Company H, 10th Regiment Cavalry (Georgia State Guards).
