John William Nesbit married Elizabeth Hoyl (or Hoyle) about 1839 in Gwinnett Co., but the couple lived for much of their married life in Alpharetta in what was Milton Co., GA. Their children were William Hoyl Nesbit, Albert Clyde Nesbit, Charles Rhyne Nesbit, Colonna Oscar Nesbit, Ira F. Nesbit, Thomas Ralph Nesbit, Andrew Clarence Nesbit, Eli Hoyl Nesbit, and Ella Clyde Nesbit.

In the Civil War, John was a Sergeant in Company B, Cherokee Legion (Georgia State Guards). Otherwise he was a farmer in what was Milton County.

(Note: John William Nesbit's youngest sister Mary Ann married a nephew of his wife Elizabeth. Mary Ann Nesbit married Benjamin Franklin Jones, son of Elizabeth's half-sister Margaret Harriet Hoyl Jones.)
