JAMES H. CASE CALLED BY DEATH
Reaper Claims Father Day Following Burial of His Son
Within a day following the burial of his eldest son, Jesse, James H. Case, one of the oldest residents in the valley, passed peacefully away at the family home, Ninth and I streets, about 10 o'clock last evening, death resulting from a breakdown caused by old age.
The end was not unexpected, as he had been confined to his bed for more than a month, gradually growing weaker. Yesterday, he lapsed into a stupor from which he only partially rallied at times, and at 6 o'clock last evening member so the family said they did not believe he would live through the night.
Deceased came to California in the early days, settling in the valley in 1852. He first tried ranching, also doing some teaming, and when the Civil War broke out was among the first to enlist in the cause of the Union. He served with distinction throughout the four years and then returned to this city.
Pioneer Teamster
He was considered the pioneer teamster of the district. He hauled freight from the Southern Pacific station at Colton to this city before a local road was ever thought of, and in the days when such hauling was more remunerative than now. When the Santa Fe built into the city he was one of the first to haul freight from its yards, and continued for years to engage in the transfer business after the railroads livened up the locality.
The family home at Ninth and I streets was built more than 40 years ago and deceased resided there continuously, rearing a family of five children, of whom three survive. They are Mrs. George Heap, Mrs. T. A. Smithson and Stephen M. Case, all of this city. The eldest son, Jesse, was buried Friday, while the second daughter, Mrs. J. W. Smithson, died four years ago.
His widow also survives. Mrs. Case has been in poor health for some time, being practically an invalid. Neither father nor mother were able to attend their son's funeral Friday.
Deceased was a member of the local G. A. R. post, under whose auspices the funeral will probably be held. No arrangements have yet been made. The remains are in charge of Stephens & Son.
