Pioneer Mother of Southland Passes; Came Here in 1859
But few terms carry so great significance as that phrase "On the Frontier," and even those whose work-a-day existence lies within the confines of the greater urban centers are apt to get a thrill at the mention of the term. A feeling of unrestraint, of adventure - an appeal to the gypsy blood in the veins - is present when mention is made of those characters whose indomitable courage carried them across plain and over mountain to inhabit and tame a primitive west.
Those pathfinders - the trail-blazers are fast diminishing. One by one they pass on until today their noble deeds and memory has become historical record. Until yesterday, the home of Mrs. Mary B. Deakins at Anaheim, housed a lone survivor of the days when each trek along the westward trip from "The States" to California meant something new and dangerous and hen death walked close to the elbow of man, women and child alike.
When Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Case Dodson passed away on Saturday evening, the west lost one of the few witnesses to its making. She had come to San Bernardino county with the Captain Jefferson Hunt party in 1854. She had resided in what is now East Colton almost continuously since that time, until a few years ago when she moved to Grand Terrace.
A native of the middle west, she witnesses the activities of the Sioux nation of Indians while she was but a girl in Iowa, and her trek to the west a bride at fourteen years of age, she witnessed the battle near Provo in which the Mormons were successful in subduing the combined forces of the plains tribes.
She was married to Henry C. Dodson in 1856 and was the mother of eleven children, five of whom are still living. These are Mrs. Mary B. Deakins of Anaheim; Gasham Dodson of East Colton; Mrs. Charles C. Bradley; William Dodson and John Dodson, all of Grand Terrace.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Knopsnyder Funeral chapel in Colton at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Interment will be made in the City Cemetery at san Bernardino.

Mrs. Dodson's Death Marks Passing of Valley Pioneer
At the death Saturday of Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Case Dodson, who was born March 30, 1842, there passed one of the last of that sturdy band of pioneers that came to San Bernardino in 1854, led by Captain Jefferson Hunt. Mrs. Dodson since early days had been a resident of east Colton until she moved to Grand Terrace several years ago.
When but a child she had seen the fierce Sioux in war dance, and later on in Provo, Utah, when still a little girl she had been within hearing distance of a fierce battle fought between the Utah tribe and the whites. The Mormons were victorious and the Indians were nearly wiped out.
She married Henry C. Dodson in 1856 when but 14 years old. Mr. Dodson has been dead for many years. Eleven children were born to her, nine of which grew to adulthood. Five of these are now living. They are Mrs. Mary B. Deakins of Anaheim, Gasham Dodson of East Colton, Mrs. Charles C. Bradley of Grand Terrace, William Dodson of Grand Terrace, and John Dodson, of Grand Terrace.
There are 10 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, and one surviving sister, Mrs. Laura Clark of San Bernardino. Besides this, Mrs. Dodson had many relatives in San Bernardino and vicinity.
Mrs. Dodson passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary B. Deakins of Anaheim. The funeral services will be held at the Knopsnyder chapel in Colton at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be in City cemetery in San Bernardino.
