Dr. R.H. (Dick) Cagle, 69, a leader in the Southern Baptist Convention in Colorado, died of a heart attack in a Colorado Springs Hospital Wednesday, October 25.
Coming here as a youth, he graduated from Wellington High School with the Class of 1923, became a member of First Baptist Church and was ordained to the ministry in the Quail Missionary Baptist Church in 1928, after graduating from Baylor University in 1927. His first pastorate was Quail Baptist Church. He also was pastor at New Hope, east of Lutie before going to Fort Worth, Dallas, Ballinger and Hereford as a pastor. He also attended Southwestern Baptist Seminary at Fort Worth, where he graduated in 1933.
He went to Colorado Springs to enter a new mission field and was elected the first Superintendent of Mission for the Southern Baptist Convention in Colorado in 1956. He served in that capacity until her retired July 31, 1970. He continued as a supply or interim pastor until his death.
Dr. Cagle also received honorary degrees from Hardin Simmons University in 1960 and Howard Payne University in 1954.
The son of Mrs. H.I. Cagle, now of Amarillo, and the late Mr. Cagle, he was born June 3, 1903 at Courtney Flat, Oklahoma. He came with his parents to Collingsworth County in 1914.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Richard G. Cagle of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Ann Kelly of Buena Vista, CO; his mother, Mrs. H.I. Cagle of Amarillo; two brothers and three sisters, Fred Cagle of Amarillo, W.W. Cagle of Hollis, OK, Miss Daisy Cagle and Mrs. Ora Mae Milton of Amarillo, and Mrs. Curtis Simmons of Floydada; and five grandchildren.
