Irvin Bates, 87, a retired farmer of the Summerfield community, died at 4:00 P.M. on Thursday at the family home on Summerfield route 2, following a long illness. Born in Noble county May 31, 1870, he was the son of Simon and Mary Kirkbride Bates. He was a lifelong resident of the Summerfield community and a member of the Bates Hill Church of Christ. His survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Robert Roe, of Summerfield route1; two sons, Chester Bates and John Bates both of near Summerfield; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; six brothers Robert of Salesville, Frank of Summerfield, Garfield, of New Washington, Oh, Peter of Reinersville, Clyde and Harley, both of near Summerfield; a sister, Mrs. Daisy Sayre, of Malta. His wife, whom he married in 1898, died in June 1954. A daughter, Mrs Pauline Rich, and four brothers, also preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Bates Hill Church of Christ and burial was made in the church cemetery. The Meek funeral home in Senecaville was in charge of arrangements. Rev. Ted Bates officiated at the last rites.
