Mary Kirkbride Bates, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Kirkbride, was born August 1, 1844, and died November 18, 1911, aged sixty-seven years, three months and seventeen days. She was united in marriage to Simeon Bates in 1861. To this union were born fourteen children, twelve sons and two daughters, twelve of whom are living. Her husband and two children preceded her several years ago. The children are Robert, Sheridan, James, Irvin, William, Franklin, Dock (who died when but two years old), Peter, Garfield, Clyde, Ray, Mrs. Daisy Sayres, Ella Pearl (who died when a few months old) and Harley. She leaves four brothers, Martin, William, Peter and Bert, all of near Sarahsville, and five sisters, Mrs. Sarah Bates, of Cambridge, Mrs. Margaret Jane Williams, of Senecaville, Mrs. Adda Vandine, of Renrock, Mrs. Martha Hinchcliffe, of Byesville, and Mrs. Dardana Moore, of Cambridge, She leaves also forty-three grandchildren to mourn the loss of a kind hearted grandmother. Her father and mother and four sisters, Mrs. Arrissa Moore, Mrs. Eda Covert, Rachel and an Infant preceded her to the great beyond.

She united with the Christian church in her sixteenth year and was a consistent worker until the end. She was a kind and affectionate mother. She had taken care of her home and children for over fifteen years without a helpmate. She was always blest with good health until nine weeks before her death when she took pneumonia. Everything was done to relieve her sufferings but God knew best and he took her into his keeping. She bore her sufferings patiently and without a murmur.

She was taken to the Mt. Ephraim cemetery on Monday, November 20th, and laid beside her husband. She was followed to her last resting place by a large number of relatives and friends. The pall bearers were six of her sons. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Harkiss, who spoke some very sympathetic words to the bereaved children and also some true words from the scripture.
