She was born on March 17, 1908 in Deerfield, one of 11 children born to Ed F. and Maude L. (Bratton) Bellows. Ellen was educated in Charlemont public schools, attending the little Red School House in East Charlemont and graduated from the former Arms Academy in the Class of 1926.
She was married to her husband of 60 years, the now late Stuart H. Smith, on Dec. 19, 1926 in Buckland. They had made their home in Greenfield their entire married life, with Stuart predeceasing her in May of 1985.

Ellen enjoyed sharing stories of growing up in rural Buckland as a child with her family and many friends. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Shelburne Falls for many years, where she enjoyed participating in the music programs and hymns.
