He served in the 34th Infantry Division, which suffered heavy losses in the Mediterranean theater in 1942-45. The division fought in Tunisia, and in the Volturno River, Gustav Line, Anzio, Arno, Bologna and Reggio campaigns in Italy.
He leaves his wife of 47 years, the former Winifred E. Brown; seven sons, Ed N. of Leicester, Richard G. of Pagosa Springs, Colo., Gary C. of Chicopee, Dale B. of Brighton, Colo., Owen R. of Dunbarton, N.H., Kevin T. of Buckland, and Dennis P. of Spring Valley, Calif.; two daughters, Linda M. Grant of Greenfield, and Catherine L. Bellows of Buckland; a brother, William B. of Charlemont; four sisters, Beatrice Rose of South Deerfield, Ellen Smith of Greenfield, Lella Dostie of Northfield, and Helen Metzger of Concord, Okla.; eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be on Sunday afternoon at Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls, with burial in East Buckland Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours, and memorial contributions may go to the American Diabetes Association, 813 Williams St., PO Box 61210, Longmeadow, 01106-1210.
