Gardner, Brigham D (1) (i 23 Jul 1936)Star Valley Independent

His wife and all his surviving family being at his bed side when the end came.
Brighan Delos Gardner was born in Cottonwood in Salt lake Valley September 18 1876. At the age of twelve he came to the valley with his parents and has lived here since, all but two years ago. In 12900 he fulfilled a mission in the North Western states where his outstanding personality and speaking ability made for him an inviable record.
In 1904 he was married in the Salt Lake Temple to Maria Blacker and since that time has lived on his ranch north of Afton. Thirteen children have blessed that union, one having preceded him to the great beyond, a baby boy who died of pneumonia at the age of three months.
Bring's health started to fail about 15 years ago and since that time has become gradually worse and worse, the past seven years being practically an invalid. Three months ago, due to intestinal trouble he was taken to the hospital for a week and treated, but because of his weakened condition he was unable to regain strength, and despite all that loving hands and doctors skill could do the end came.
Besides a host of friends and relatives who loved and respected him very much, he leaves to mourn his loss, a devoted wife, twelve children three sisters and one brother. The children are: Delos of Grover, Mrs Allie Hyde, Marguerite, Lincoln, Dorothy, Elna, Darrel, Kenneth, Cumora, Maxine, Genevieve, and Vern all of Afton. His brother, William and sisters Vilate Anderson of Grover, Viola Roberts and Mildred Roberts of Afton.
Impressive funeral services were held in the North Ward chapel Sunday at 2:00 p.m. for Brigham D, Gardner under the direction of Cousellor John A. Linford.
The first musical number was a duet by Phyllis Hepworth and elmina Papworth "Beautiful Zion Built Above" assisted at the piano by Dora Taysom. The open prayer was offered by Bp. Ray S. Thurman of Grover.
A violin Trio, "Oh My Father" was played by Arch Dean and Orrin Gardner.
The first speaker was A.D. Taysom, he mentioned the time when he and Brig were in the mission field in Milwaukee, where he learned to know him and the best that was in him. He marveled at the staunch faith he had kept during all the years of sickness, spoke of the beautiful, courageous woman that Sister Gardner had been and her faithfulness in caring for her husbad during all his years of sickness.
Bp. Carl Robinson was the second speaker he told of his early acquaintance with Brig. He first met him on the ball field, and spoke of his efficiency as a base ball player, he spoke of his acquaintance with the family and how dependable they have been in the ward.
The mixed quartet "Oh Grave Where is Thy Victory" was beautifully rendered by Ivan and Arch Gardner. Nellie Roberts and Annie Hood. They were accompanied on the piano by Elaine Toland.
The next speaker was Bp Osborne Low, he said that the large number of friends and relatives from far and near that were present, the beautiful words that had been spoken and the many flowers, were high tributes to Sister Maria Blacker Gardner and her family. He related numerous associations he had had with the family and the help they rendered him while he was bishop of the ward, spoke of how the Lord had blessed them with a fine family of stalwart young men and women.
Pres. Clarence Gardner spoke comforting words to the bereaved family and encouraged them to follow the advice of their father. He said he was captain of the baseball team that Brig had played in for eight years and told of the fine athlete he had been.
Arch Gardner rendered a beautiful sosl "your Voice" accompanied by Laura G. Draney.
A.A. Hart, a member of the Bear Lake Stake presidency was the next speaker. He was mission president when Brig was on a mission, he told of the fine work he had performed while in the mission field.
George Blacker, a brother of Mrs Gardner was the closing speaker, he said he liked to think of death as passing from one port to another, we leave sorrowing friends and relatives at one port and we are greeted by loved ones as we cross the ocean to the next port, and as one man has said, death is a grand adventure. He encouraged the children to look after their mother and to cheer her in her hour of loneliness.
The closing number was a duet "Shall We Meet Beyond the River" by Gean Harrison and Nellie Roberts.
Closing prayer was offered by A.F. Burton.
The rostrum and casket were banked with beautiful floral offerings.
Five of his sons and a son-in-law acted as pallbearers.
