WAS RUN OVER BY A WAGON
A Close Call to a Fatal Accident Yesterday Afternoon on D Street.
Joseph Hancock Run Over by a Wagon, the Wheel Passing Over His Chest.
What came near being a fatal accident occurred yesterday near the corner of D and Third streets.
A load of baled hale was coming around the corner from Third street into D when the front wheel of the wagon struck the street car track, throwing Jos. Hancock, the driver, off, directly under the front wheels of the wagon, which passed completely over his shoulder and chest. The rear wheel did not strike him as he rolled to one side before it reached him.
As there were 40,000 pounds of hay on the load and the wagon itself weighed about 1600 pounds, it is a miracle that Hancock was not instantly killed. The only explanation is that in striking the car rail the load was slightly tipped to one side and relieved the weight on the wheel. So impossible did it look that a man could survive such an accident that some thought that the wheel only struck the man and pushed him to one side, but several witnesses beside Mr. Hancock himself assert positively that there is not the least doubt but that the wheel passed completely over the upper portion of his body.
The injured man was placed in a carriage and taken to his home on Mt. Vernon avenue, where at last report he was resting easily and it is hoped that nothin serious will result, though there may be internal injuries not yet located by the physicians.

War Drives Local Man To Suicide
Worry About War Causes Suicide of Local Man In Barn At His Home Here
Joseph Hancock, son of Joseph Hancock Sr., the latter a nephew of John Hancock, one of the signers of the declaration of independence previous to the revolutionary war committed suicide by shooting himself through the head with a revolver at his home in West Ninth street at 9 o’clock today.
War news, hard times and the high cost of living are attributed as the causes which led Hancock to end his life.
He entered his barn on the family ranch, a report of a gun was heard and his dead body was found by members of his family.
The body is at the Mark B. Shaw funeral parlors, where an inquest will be held.
Hancock is a native son of San Bernardino and has resided in this city all his life.
He was about 50 years of age and a son of John Hancock, who is now living, age 95 years.
For some time Hancock has been despondent, talking almost continually of the European war and about the existing high prices for almost every kind of commodity.
When the war crisis came to a culmination with Germany and America a few days ago, Hancock grew unusually excitable and he discussed continually phases of the probably war.
That this preyed upon his mind until he became temporarily insane is stated. He left no note to explain his action. He had previously threatened to end his life.
The Hancock family is well known to pioneers, especially in view of the fact that the family traces its ancestry to the colonists who settled in the eastern states and who aided much in shaping the affairs of the nation when the rule of England grew so tyrannical that the thirteen colonies began the battle of freedom.
Hancock leaves a widow and three children, Mrs. Ruby Decrow of Indio, Mrs. Esther Littlefield and Miss Irene Hancock of this city, also a father, Joseph Hancock, three sisters, Mrs. Lusena Lord, Mrs. C. H. Tyler and Mrs. George Miller, the latter of Highland, and a brother, Foster Hancock, of this city.
