Excerpt from: FOR THE PROSECUTION
And now, gentlemen of the jury, I have occupied the time allotted to me by his honor, Judge Otis, for the opening of this case, and I cannot close without again referring to her whose burden is heaviest in the sorrowful case, but who is sustained by her unfaltering faith in the goodness and care of our heavenly Father. She is the product of our valley; you have seen her on the stand as a witness and heard her sympathetic statements; a lovelier lily never bloomed in our valley. When the school children of our county were assembled in convention for the purpose of selecting a Queen of May to crown with a wreath of immortality, those children all turned to that beautiful and graceful lily, Lucinda Hancock, now the widow of George Lord Jr., the daughter of Father Joseph Hancock and Mother Hancock, one of the most worthy and highly esteemed of the pioneer families of San Bernardino. This May queen selected for her partner in life George Lord Jr., a Native Son of the Golden West, a native of the San Bernardino valley, a schoolmate whom she had learned to love; the son of one of the most venerable and affectionate of fathers, the son of one of the most tender and loving of mothers, the friend to everybody, who named him but to praise him, who knew him but to love him, who has been called away by what our law calls want of caution, want of circumspection, on the part of the defendant, who had charge of him and administered nothing for his recovery but applications of Christian Science, which was not at all adapted to the disease with which he was afflicted.
