Memorial services for Pvt. Lawrence Folden were held here on Sunday afternoon, October 8, in the Mission Church, with Rev. Thv. Myhrer of Newfolden officiating, assisted by Rev. J.O. Jacobson of Thief River Falls.
Lawrence Folden, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. T.B. Folden of Holt was born in Holt township on December 24, 1923. He was baptized by Rev. Myhrer. He attended public school in Dist. 61 of Holt and high school in Newfolden. He was confirmed by Rev. Myhrer in 1938. He was called into the services December 1943. He trained at Camp Fannin, Texas and left for overseas and arrived in England in June.
Pvt. Folden was last home on furlough last May. He was killed in action in France on Thursday, September 7 at the age of 20 years, 8 months and 14 days. He leaves to mourn his untimely passing his parents, five brothers and four sisters, namely, Bergman of Newfolden, Edward and Walter of Boston, Mass., Arnold of Mobridge, So. Dak., Arvid of Devils Lake, N. Dak., Mrs. Clyde Hutchinson of Aberdeen, So. Dak., Mrs. Edwin Hanson of Holt, Mrs. Dallas Harris of Ransay, Ill., and Mrs. Tory Johnson of New London, Conn. Friends of the young soldier sang several songs and Mrs. Albert Fredrickson played “Nearer My God to Thee” on the organ as they entered and left the church.
The American Legion post of idle River presented the Flag of the nation to Mrs. T.B. Folden, his mother. Mr. Arvid Carlson of Middle River arranged the Flags and decorations.
The News joins the people of this community in extending their sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Folden and family in their great hour of sorrow in the loss of a young son and brother, who sacrificed his life that we should all have freedom. Holt Weekly News, Friday, October 13, 1944
